Today was the coolest day.
We went to the Ercom School of Excellence. The school is ran by Richards brother Eric
whom he put through college. It is a
private school with 150 students. I
expected the school to be in doors and much larger. I was wrong.
There were two long, basically animal stalls on both sides of the plot
of land. The classrooms were separated
by head high walls and had wood doors to go in.
From the wall up was completely open to the air. The kids were SO excited to see us come. I took both of my suitcases with
donations. When we got off of the bus
the kids had a little presentation for Lisa where they sang about her and all
the help she has given them and how grateful they are. It was so freaking cute. Eric has a 7 month old baby named after Lisa
as well! We all split up and did teaching topics. We covered nutrition and hand hygiene. I helped teach nutrition. We taught probably 3rd graders and
they remembered everything. At the end
we reviewed and they totally repeated everything we said. They all said they want to play futbol and
that that is why they feel they should eat healthy. The kids are so freaking obedient. They stand when we enter and sit when we tell
them too. When we call on them they
stand and give an answer. They took
turns and said please and thank you. It
was insane. Me, Kayla, and Kevin helped
make the wind socks with the same kids.
We gave each kid two colored pencils and they were so grateful. They didn’t complain about the colors we gave
them and they shared between their desk mates.
They wind socks turned out so well! I went over to visit the little kids
working on the sack puppets. They were
so freaking cute! They had like a herd
of elephants and they were running around and playing around. It was so much fun! Lisa said that the kids
don’t get an opportunity to do crafts very often, let alone have their own
crafts to work on. We only had to show
the kids once and they picked it up so quickly.
After crafts we met in the schoolyard and played around with bubbles and
took pictures with the kids. They were
so great. We had lunch that was prepared
by Eric’s wife and it was so delicious.
They had a computer lab with one computer for all the students. I walked in the lab and their were chickens
chilling on the computer. It was so
weird. Before we left the kids all lined
up and recited little memorizations that they have to do. The small kids have all the books of the old
testament memorized. They really enjoy
school and were so happy. The tuition is
13 ghana cd per term and they also have to pay 1.4 CD everyday. The kids actually hand this money to their
teacher to pay for the food and things for the day. The parents freak out over a monthly sum so
daily is easier for everyone. It is
really cool how the kids are so accountable for their education and how the
know that it is so important even at such a young age. It makes me feel like crap because I know I
take my education for granted. I get so
mad at the system when I should be grateful that I can even have the opportunity
to go. We headed to the market. I got a vanilla fan ice. It was so great. I even got fee gum for orbit. So stoked.
The hotel was relaxing. We swam
for a while but the sun went away. I
have been reading my textbook like crazy getting ready for my Sunday quiz. 3 chapters to go! We went to check on our
clothes getting made and my turned out so good! I am so excited. The shirt is all fitted and nice and my pants
are so tight! I can’t wait to wear them home.
It will be so fun! We stopped at
the seamstress for the girls to look at there stuff. The girls mentioned that she uses a manual
sewing machine and I attribute this to the fact that you have more
control. Well while we were in there she
was sewing away and the power went out.
So she pulled out her phone and put the flashlight on and kept sewing
away. With the unreliable electricity she is able to sew all the time. Way smart.
I had a good talk with Lisa. I
have been trying to figure out how I can help Richard out but I just don’t
think straight money is useful. So we
decided to help him get a new phone and Internet service so he can be
connected. I think we are all going to
pull our money together to help him out.
I am really excited! He will be so happy. I called home really quickly. Mom was so worried that something was
wrong. Pretty funny. Again, I love it here. Everyday is my new favorite day and
everything is so fun. I love how happy
and simple things are here and how friendly everyone is. I am so grateful!
